TAWAI

Tawai is the word the nomadic hunter gatherers of Borneo use to describe their inner feeling of connection to nature.

  • Inspiring movie about people lives very different from the western constructs we surround ourselves in here in the UK.
  • A return back to what we may have lost
  • A beautiful insight into the our connection with the natural world
  • A subject matter close to my heart and a similar exploration into nature in terms of the message and impact - that I want to explore in this project
  • Close links to my own experiences - travelled to Borneo myself and have felt this journey (taken in the month before starting the course) has had a lasting impact on my own connection to nature, how I see it and how being immersed in forests, hills, mountains has had a lasting impact over my practice, development and creativity.
  • Movie poster - strong and similar use of shape, layers and colour to my own. Colour and texture subtle and I think the detail of the tree and foreground focal point helps draw the eye in.
  • - A focal point & detail to help reign the abstract shapes / hills / mountains in...something to consider in my own imagery through the use of smaller more detailed shapes, rocks, light and shadow.
  • Not just about composition, but depth and simple but strong familiarity of imagery when using shape

"What is our connection to the natural world, and how has this changed over time?"

cool little exploration into colour by practitioner
Kristin Texeira
"planets + their corresponding plants + their corresponding colors"
Kristin's swatch card selection
Scribblings:

  • *ANOVA COLOUR LOVA* WOOOOO! :) - practice super synergises with mine!
  • Lovely to see how Kristin Texeira uses the visual and diverse appeal of shape and colour and elevates this work in a variety of interesting way across multiple applications.
  • I have been toying with the idea of a postcard pack / selection of smaller pieces for a while now and seeing the response to Kristin’s colour swatch collections and portfolio of work, there is obviously creative appeal and market interest in the subject of colour (she seems to keep running out of stock!), as well as style and tone of work.
  • Kristin appears to have a similar approach to research and investigation into colour as a ‘practitional focus’ - to me and how I have been developing my practice across this course and in particular this module. The colours draw you in, and the story behind them / concept / quote / - as in Kristin’s case the links between planets, colours and plants (all on trend visuals) - keeps the audience interested
  • - as does my overarching concept of "worlds"... i think
  • Artwork wanting to be seen, collected, displayed - gives true happy vibes :) An emotional response :) I hope my work does too!
  • Possibly another “mock up - postcard mini-worlds pack” - style/thing to watch out for (and another potential thing to add to the never-ending “to print” list :)
  • There is so much happiness in colour. The exploration, history and possibilities with colour makes it lovely to see another practitioner and their work - who is also having a ton of fun and sympathetic to the way colour is used in their practice.
