Secret 7: Final Artwork and Submission

Final Artwork submitted

A selection of mock ups:

>S732: The Jam - Art School

I am really pleased with the simple but effective approach i undertook for creating this imagery and finish of these designs for "Art School". I was able to convey the idea of rebellion (the main theme within the Jam's track) and communicate this through crumpled foil. I hope it manages to capture my concept of "screwed up" "crumpled / binned homework" clearly and that the judges like these as much as I do.

If I could do this again, I would probably take longer time deciding and committing to a final or just do a lot less versions. That is the thing I found experimenting with new digital techniques and overlays - the play and editing mean that every new process provides a new alternative to the previous design and I found it really difficult to choose and pass up on any of my designs as an option for a final. That is the main reason I ended up submitting 4 for this one track - I couldn't choose and felt the judges should see all variations.

>S734: Max Richter - Dream 3

This design was my first attempted and I am really pleased with the outcome. I was able to use photography and ink in such a way that helped to capture the sense of atmosphere and "dream like" / "space" themes I took from when fist listening to this track.

What I feel is most successful about this final solution is the amount of depth i was able to create. Using countless layers and blending tools in photoshop - i managed to essentially split my original photograph in to a much sharper foreground and focal point, whilst manipulating the background detail to blur and shift beneath.

>S729: Chvrches - Clearest Blue

This image was a lot of fun to create but extremely fiddly and time consuming. There is probably a really easy way to create a similar effect, however despite the hundreds of individual layers and edits, I am really really pleased with it as a final representation of this lovely track.

I feel the successful elements of this image centre around my concept of repetition, echo and build up - which are what I think of and visualise when listening to this song. It is an electric sounding song, quite structured in its composition with a repetitive steady build to a climax. I have attempted to convey these echo sounds and repetitions by incorporating the various structured squares, positioning them in such a way that they are not linear - but have a starting point and and end...just how the build up in the song does. Each individual square was manipulated separately, adjusting exposure, colour and opacity as an extra attempt to play on the tracks title "clearest blue".

>S731: Jack Garratt - Worry

This attempt at submitting a 3d design had its ups and downs. Initially I was really excited by the prospect, however the overall process took a lot longer than expected and having to restart my design from scratch after finishing and attempting to fix to an actual 7" sleeve I had made - meant that I wasn't able to do much development work.

What I feel works well within the image is how the beads do follow a curved pattern (to communicate the ideas I initially had when first listen to this track). It really does echo elements of the message in the song : the beads may be all different colours but "**** it" they do follow a pattern - so don't worry about it. As described in my initial ideas, (emphasis on the "curvy" bass weighted elements of the track) I was able to use a variety of darker/brighter "key" coloured beads to also accentuate the curves within my marbled design and reference image.

If I was to attempt 3D work again for this brief - as I plan on doing next year for sure - I will now be prepared in knowing that all 3D work needs to be sent in the post to the Secret 7 . A digital image submitted via the website is what will be printed and used instead of a request being made for the 3D artwork by Secret 7 if the artwork won (which for some reason is what I thought and I still don't have a clue if you get the 3d artwork back of you send it to Secret 7 and it doesn't make the cut...something to contact Secret 7 about next year for sure.

>S733: John Lennon - Imagine

This and the Etta James track were definitely the most difficult to creatively convey and design an album cover for. When a song is so famous and has had a lot of impact on the world, as this song has, I found it really difficult to branch away from the already recognisable abundance of album artwork already out there for this track and the obvious cliche approach to imagery that could be used. I think this track was the curveball in the bunch and the main design problem within the secret 7 brief.

To try and combat this problem I decided to go back to a technique that I am quite familiar with -paper cut. I feel what is successful about this overall final design is actually how well it turned out physically and the way the paper cut design element protrudes from the sleeve centre - as if from the centre of the vinyl itself housed within. This is an attempt to communicate the impact this song has had on the music industry, asking the audience to "imagine" along with John and recognise the potential of changing how we treat and view the world and those in it today. Potential shown s the flower blossoming from within the vinyl itself taking the name of the song very literally and pushing the boundaries of what a sleeve can be in an imaginative way.

>S730: Etta James - At Last

I feel that this image is my least successful when looking at the full body of final imagery I created for this brief and it is a shame because i love Etta James! I think the reason I got so hung up with what to create and design is simply because i Know the song so well and without even realising - I would have created something really cliche and obvious - which is not what I think will win the comp.

Saying that - it is a nice enough image and I did my best to try and convey what i took from the track when listening to it. New love literally blossoms as people become more and more acquainted and deeper in love. "At Last" suggesting that that finally love has come along and that it is in the early stages - just like these blossoming flowers. The circle elements suggesting the potential possibilities for a new relationship and new love.

>S735: Tame Impala - The Less I Know the Better

Inspired by the artist research i underwent when approaching the artwork for the Tame Impala track meant that I was able to create my designs in a style and visual aesthetic I have always wished I could.  am not one for digital edits in anyway, but I instantly knew the value of my marbling experiments and I feel that the Digital manipulation of these prints has really pushed the overall composition to new heights.

I feel the success of these 2 designs that I submitted lay in the use of colour, which has been a personal mission of mine to improve upon and apply in my practise as well as the use of interesting and unique subject matter as well as dynamic compositions.

For me these images hit the brief - I feel the reflect the up beat synthetic tone of this psychedelic track and the designs feel nice to look at - just like the track is very catch and nice to listen to.

Submission & Confirmation

Evaluation

I have to say entering this competition brief has been one of the most fun and rewarding experiences. Being able to dedicate my time to new processes and enjoying what really inspires me - has given my confidence and sense of my artistic and creative ability a new lease of life. I needed this - to go back to basics and just enjoy the playing and experimenting.

I have been really surprised by what I was able to achieve in terms of artwork for this brief. Every step of the way I really tried to step away from processes that I know and develop my skills in areas I have never even thought of doing before.

I feel like my favourite and most successful images are all above - and I reached this conclusion after many days of deliberation and filtering though my many hundreds of "slight opacity", "hue changes" and "final version 1.1.6 real.final" versions. I think the way I will to try and combat getting lost in the never ending an ultimately limitless vortex that is digital editing in Adobe Photoshop is

- learn new tricks. I have learnt so many new digital skills for this brief and entire module come to think of it that this may be a little silly to try and do anytime soon - however i would at least try and develop and master all I have learnt and try and apply this to more creative pieces in the future (where appropriate - cant get ahead of myself here, I am still an analogue media girl after all!)
This way I feel I will slowly begin to learn which processes work best for what job and i wont get lost making many "just incase" versions of the same pieces of artwork.

-be more decisive. I need to evaluate my work as i go along and see what is working the best and try to develop these areas further. If I don't like something - move on. Don't spend all my time trying to force something decent out of a creative design or approach that isn't working. It can put you off al together. Hopefully making key "keep' or 'bin" choices will result in fewer more considered designs of a higher quality.

Secret 7: Mock ups

As well as creating all this artwork for the Secret 7 brief, I really want to create mock ups for each to see how the artwork will work in context as an actual vinyl sleeve. i am seeing so many design mock ups recently on different social media websites and blogs I think they will be a nice addition to the final artwork I create for each track and help give a more finalised and professional finish to my design board submissions.

KAWS - Yorkshire Sculpture Park

KAWS
akaBrian Donnelly
- Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Website: http://www.ysp.co.uk/exhibitions/kaws
Artists website: http://www.kawsone.com/shop
Artists blog: http://www.kawsone.com/blog

I managed to make it down to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park today to take a look at a visual artist and sculpture who has inspired my practice for quite some time. Finding out that 'KAWSONE' was over from NY in the states and set up his first UK exhibition here so close to Leeds was an opportunity I couldn't miss.

I first discovered Kawsone via instagram and was instantly transfixed by his acrylic painted pieces and use of strong, bold, neon like colours to depict subjects that seemed almost childlike and familiar - but that had been amped up to a highly refined graphic -design style aesthetic.

It was only after following KAWS for a few moths that I realised painting wasn't the only final applications or his artwork and that 3D pieces, screen printing, 4D etc all played a part in the visual mission that is KAWS. Object and environment play a large part in my own practice, i like the physicality of 3d and the intricacy of 2d - so to find a synergy between the two is what I strive for. KAWS has this down to a perfection.

This exhibit is on until June 12th and I urge anyone to take a trip to check it out. The craftsmanship and sheer scale of this collection has such impact and emotion, I hope to be able to employ some of KAWS approaches to visual creativity into my own practice one day. Playing with scale, i feel, is a simple and direct way to catch your audiences attention, manipulate atmosphere and emotion, engage, immerse and transport an audience to somewhere else entirely. Great stuff!

KAWS product research (from the exhibition):

I found this really key in terms of thinking about the application of my illustrations for OUIL505. A larger set of illustrations, maybe murals etc or large scale 3D work supported by a collection of smaller scale products and accessories - aimed at consumers visiting the gallery & exhibit and making their way to the gallery shop afterwards, is a strong collection and more likely to engage with a wider audience.

Setting up the exhibition:

My photos from the trip:

Things to take forward:
• Use of simple shapes
• Block colours
• Play on familiar subjects (to resonate with audience)
• Scale play
• dimension play (2d, 3D, 4D)
• Art as products - art itself can act as products:
- stationary
- modelsc/ toys / 3d figurines
- fashion (bags, t-shirts)
- Illustrative (high quality prints, posters)
- Informative (leaflets, pamphlets, postcards etc - describing the artists (bio etc) / exhibition /
ethos / artistic process / concept etc) - nice addition to be sold along side an exhibition as
  a memento.

Secret 7: Hama bead art - 3D

Super last minute as the secret 7 deadline isnt long away!!! But it suddenly came to me the other day that I could try and produce something 3D for my album artwork in response to the tracks released.

I have seen that past submission winners work has also been 3D (like the likes of felt-mistress)

and some really do push the boundaries of what album artwork can be.

This kind of this is really inspiring to me and I feel can take artwork and the creative experience to the next level.

I am not sure which track from the secret 7 list to have a go at turning into a 3D "masterpiece" yet, but ever since seeing previous album artwork for Tame Impala, I have been really inspired by psychedelic aesthetics, pattern/details and use of colour. This for some reason gave me the idea to attempt some hama bead artwork! - melting a million beads together with an iron and forever finding tiny colourful beads all over the house.....what more could you ask for?

On the hunt for inspiration, tutorials and techniques.....so ofcourse i made a pinterest board!
It really helps me to organse and catagorize everything that interests me - makes it easy to refer back too and also makes for a lovely reading list/browse

Secret 7: The Brief

This exciting Secret 7 brief asks all creatives to get involved and design a 7" album cover for one of the 7 tracks released via the competition website. This competition appeals to everyone and provides a platform for people to create a certain type of visual artwork and product design that they wouldn't usually be able to. The concept behind the brief really inspires and motivates the entrants to create a artwork that pushes the boundaries of what album artwork is, asking everyone who wants to to get involved and submit a design, to step away from the obvious and produce something amazing (but not revealing) of the track it is for.

In approaching this brief my aim is to do just that - step away from the obvious both visually and in my creative approach to each track, hopefully achieving some really interesting visual responses that grab the attention of the judges and make it into the exhibition. I really want to learn some new skills throughout this module and feel that this brief could provide me with the means to do that as well as indulge in a real interest of mine - music and album artwork.

First quick ideas:

•Paper cut intricate designs that link to each secret 7 track into my marbled pieces...maybe keep the original designs intact for future use. So scan chosen marbled patterns in, edit in Photoshop and then print out/cut into and layer like this:

Or keep most of marbled design and then have specific interwoven areas cut out ...

Layers of another cut out design (maybe out of another single sheet of marbling-cut out intricately then layered and stuck onto another design beneath. Cuts on top act like a window showing the design beneath:

--------

Sound wave art
For each song (7) listen to it in its different frequencies to actually visualise the highs and lows, tones, base and treble etc

Illustrate this in some way. Make each sound wave subtle but individual to each specific song - each will be unique

Incorporate the other elements the sound helps to visualise and inspire

Marbling could weave in and out of the sound wave?

The sound wave is the marbling?

-Draw a line with different coloured paints in the corn flower syrup. One long line from side to side or up and down or right to left , corner to corner etc then use a toothpick/matchstick to flick the paint and draw out the sine wave line from the colours line outwards. This should cause each 'flick' / line drawn edge causes the paint to splatter and swirl outwards
-Lay treated paper on top and print this
Could later this effect into of usual marble patterns beneath the sine wave
-could draw a line of red directly next to a line of blue (like the anaglyph artwork) in the clean corn flower mixture and get a comb with a matchstick attached at each end (about 10cm apart for instance) then stick in the ink lines and draw the sine wave. The two matchsticks at each end will effectively draw 2 lines at once in each colour-1 red, 1 blue  creating the "double" / "3D " effect
-could as more match sticks to create more lines - doubled, tripled, quadrupled etc - could even add more colours so each matchstick is in a different colour - bright cmyk colours - red, yellow, green, blue etc and keep doubling up with more matchsticks

  • print all of the above on treated paper

Anaglyph artwork drawn in the ways above(not just sign waves)

Anaglyph artwork for each or at least use bright CMYK colour palette

Typography cut out of sleeve cover. Song lyrics? Laid out like this:

Sleeve is like a book. So the page opens and inside is a transparent sleeve jacket. Front of cover page that opens can be cut into or layout like a folded "net" for the customer to make.

Could make a vinyl needle?

Secret 7: Initial Ideas and Research

Approaching the brief

In first approaching this brief I wanted to give each song a fair try when attempting to visualise creatively. I decided a good way to listen to all tracks was to so without watching any of their music videos or looking at any of their current album artwork - so as to not be influenced by any other aesthetics already associated with the well known tracks and artists. The track players on the secret 7 website made this nice and easy.

Initial thoughts and ideas when  listening to each track:

> S729 / CHVRCHES - CLEAREST BLUE
Secret 7: “Our personal favourite from Chvrches’ terrific 2015 album ‘Every Open Eye’. This synth pop track builds and build before exploding into something very special.”
- See more at: http://secret-7.com/about#discover
First thoughts when listening to the track:
-Progressive
-Atmospheric
-Echo soft angelic main voice
-Repetitive backing track and synth – could this feature in a pattern somehow
-Pop and light hearted – reflective in colour choice
-Title reflected in colour palette choice?

-Catchy and explosive when hook and beat reaches climax – could this be shown in pattern of design? Pattern gradually builds up in brightness/detail/colour/visual aesthetic? Corner to corner?

>S730 / ETTA JAMES - AT LAST
Secret 7: “The oldest track we’ve ever pressed! Originally released in 1960, this song is the definition of timeless and continues to soundtrack magic moments.”

Previous album artwork research:

First thoughts when listening to the track:
This is a very well known track so to help I thought I would write down the things that first come to mind when listening to the track.

-Easy Sunday morning
-Relaxed and sultry
-Classical / strings backing track – reflective in design somehow?
-The song reflects the lyrics really well – as if FINALLY love has “come along” – positive, relieving – album artwork should reflect this also without being too obvious.
-Colours: yellows, light blues, summery? Or contrast with typical colour palette for love and romance? (reds, pinks, lens flare)
key lyrics to keep in mind:

>S731 / JACK GARRATT - WORRY
Secret 7: “Jack is destined for big things in 2016 having already bagged the BRITS Critics Choice. ‘Worry’ is taken from his debut album due in February.”
- See more at: http://secret-7.com/about#discover

Previous album artwork research:
First thoughts when listening to the track:
-Catchy tune
-Heavy base in the hook – bass creates an accent on certain lyrics “let me worry about it” “give yourself some rest” almost to accentuate sarcasm in the message of the song.
-Creative notes: sounds curvey somehow (due to bend in the bass)
KEY LYRICS TO KEEP IN MIND:

****************************************************
>S732 / THE JAM - ART SCHOOL
Secret 7: “Taken from the band’s 1977 debut album ‘In The City’. Only the title-track was released from that record, we think we're finally giving Art School the release it deserves.”
- See more at: http://secret-7.com/about#discover

Previous album artwork research:

First thoughts when listening to the track:
-Conjures feelings of instant rebellion
-Anarchy – how can I show this without being too obvious?
fun
-Quick Punchy, Energetic – dance – movement thanks to pace and temp of tune
KEY LYRICS TO KEEP IN MIND:

****************************************************
>S733 / JOHN LENNON - IMAGINE
Secret 7: “Arguably the most iconic track of all time. As Rolling Stone once eloquently put it, “it is now impossible to imagine a world without "Imagine." And we need it, more than he ever dreamed”.”
- See more at: http://secret-7.com/about#discover

Previous album artwork research:

First thoughts when listening to the track:
This has to be the most well known track released as part of this brief which I feel may influence my response a little. It is hard to not be guided by imagery, thoughts and feelings already associated to a song that has had so much impact and a really strong message .

Play on the common and well known nature of the track?
Play on the impact that this song has had since its release and its message of :

Teachings
Recognise and respect the true value of life, humanity and the world
World change
New beginnings
Unity
Peace on earth

Look at time song was released
Hippie connotation that could be transferred / communicated through imagery.

Story and lyrics within song manage to capture audience and ull on heartstrings
Common theme / subject for a song

Key lyrics

“the world will live as one”

KEY LYRICS TO KEEP IN MIND:

>S734 / MAX RICHTER - DREAM 3
Secret 7: “Taken from an 8 hour album which made Rough Trade’s top 5 albums of 2015 and is believed to be the longest single piece of classical music ever recorded. It’s also our first release with no lyrics!”
- See more at: http://secret-7.com/about#discover
Previous album artwork research:

First thoughts when listening to the track:
Such a contrast to the other tracks and happy to be introduced to some lovely new classical music.
I wouldn’t have expected this to be chosen as one of the 7 tracks for some reason – shows a good variety in choice this year.

I feel like this piece of music tells a heavy (and lengthy) story by the sounds of the comments from secret 7: “Taken from an 8 hour album which made Rough Trade’s top 5 albums of 2015 and is believed to be the longest single piece of classical music ever recorded. It’s also our first release with no lyrics!”

Soft, subtle
full of depth and deeper meaning
each instrument has its place and part to play in the story the tune is telling – each have their own character?
floaty and dreamlike
negative/minor key
without forEground instrument…almost a bit sad?

visual notes:
space
nothingess
thoughtful
atmospheric
beauty
nature
NO LYRICS

S735 / TAME IMPALA - THE LESS I KNOW THE BETTER
Secret 7: “Tame Impala’s third studio album ‘Currents’ was in the mix for pretty much every publications ‘Top Records of 2015’ and rightly so.”
- See more at: http://secret-7.com/about#discover

Previous album artwork research:
First thoughts when listening to the track:
I feel like my head must have been in the sand for quite a while, because I had never heard of Tame Impala until now – and I love love love.

Upbeat
Sexy seductive
Unique
Quirky (in both sounds, gasps, hook, electronic)
Passionate
Groovy
Electronic

Colourful
Visually dynamic and detailed
Psychedelic?

Another tune with a clear story attached:

Heartache
Young love
Teenage
Seductive
Atmospheric
Echos and repetition of lyrics – show in visuals?

KEY LYRICS TO KEEP IN MIND:

“Don’t make me wait for ever” - repeated
“I was doing fine without you”

Thoughts following from from this initial research:

I am really inspired by the diversity of tracks provided by Secret 7 this year, so much so that I think I would like to count this as my substantial individual brief. I feel I could approach each of the tracks in many different ways and feel i am indulging in an area of design and illustration practice that really interests me.
