In Studio - Notes, Handout & Task: Composition

Highlighted handout:

In studio questions & notes:

What is composition?

The selection and arrangement of key elements within the picture space

What can good composition achieve?

Expressing the illustrator/artists idea/aim clearly and effectively. Can create a satisfied sense of order, communication and narrative.

What are the four main elements of composition?

Area
Depth
Line
Value

What is the first thing to do when thinking about composition?

Break key elements within the image idea down into simple shapes and plan how they interact with each other within the frame.

What is the difference between sketching and making artwork?

Sketching is 'planning', roughs, ideas, journalism, research etc. Artwork is the outcome - a considered piece of work. The coming together of good planning and skills.

When studying composition, consider:

  • foreground, mid-ground, background
  • balance of colours and value
  • line of sight (how your eyes read the image)
  • negative space
  • perspective
  • view point (birds eye, etc)
  • overlapping elements
  • anything that you see, feel or observe

In studio critical task:

Listing what I believe to be the compositional strengths of the following pieces of work, taking into consideration how I can break the image down into shapes, lines and space:

Victo Ngai
Michael Kirkham
Serena Katt

Glyn Dillon

Tomer Hanuka
Eleni Kalorkoti

Luke Pearson
Eleanor Davis
Robert Heindel

Joe Todd Stanton

Yay we are looking at composition! There are so many important elements to consider when creating successful composition within an image, but it is all so worthwhile when the final work is on point, interesting and engaging to the audience. Foreground, mid-ground, background, colour balance, line of sight, negative space, framing/cropping, rule of thirds, perspective, viewpoint, depth, tone/value and overlapping elements are all tools/theories out there to be made use of within my own images and I cant wait to explore them further.
