Studio Brief 3 - Tell an Untold Story Pt 2: The Picture Book - Artwork Process

The Final Artwork Process

Finally sourcing some decent sized pieces of wood thanks to my partner and knowing what artwork I wanted to feature in my book, I was able to begin.

Here is how I did it (in self explanatory photos):

For the majority of the pieces I began by choosing an appropriate size piece of wood (after my partner had risked many splinters breaking it all up for me)

I proceeded to use masking tape to mark out a frame in which to work within.

I then drew my design in pencil directly onto the wood and moved on to painting the specific scene/souvenir.

Each piece of wood was chopped after the artwork had been completed, to help better frame the artwork and to hopefully help with the final scanning and editing of the images to fit in the book format.

Final finished artwork

For the front cover I decided to step away from the wood aspect and leave it simple. This should create quite a surprise for the audience when they come to look through the book as it doesn't give the game away. All of the elements of the front cover are still painted entirely with gouache.

Successes

  • I achieved what I wanted too with the artwork in terms of content and I really like the added effect the wood gives to each piece.
  • I have tried to keep my colour choice consistent throughout most pieces, helping create a set/sequence of imagery.
  • The larger pieces really do give a sense of context and flow to the collection and hopefully this will be evident in the ordering of the pages within the book

Failures

  • I am not completely satisfied with the artwork and in no way happy with my painting skills.
  • I am not sure I have done my chosen location justice with what I have created
  • The wood may be a little much throughout the whole book - too much of the same?
  • Each piece of artwork has been very difficult to photograph - even at this stage. I am hoping to tackle this when it comes to digital editing and also hope scanning the wood protects the detail.
