This meeting with Matt today was really beneficial. Having missed a lot of studio time due to health issues, I really needed some feedback and direction on the work and research I had generated so far.
The main outcomes of the progress review meant yet another change in my ideas and the future processing of artwork for this brief. The suggestion to try something new and out of the ordinary (in other words no paper) was a bit of a scary thing to hear and come to terms with when that is what I had originally been aiming for for the final artwork.
This does however mean that if I step away from the paper cut aspect, I should be giving myself more time to complete artwork and create something I would have usually missed out on entirely.
In looking at the illustrators that Matt suggested during the progress review, one illustrators work really stood out to me.
Nigel Peake

What really captured me in Nigel's work was his beautiful use of line and mark making to create such intricate representations of his surroundings. He seems a master at watercolour, adding paint to his drawings in such a sympathetic way to not take away from any detail, but add just the right amount of colour promoting the interest and beauty of the subject. The artwork he creates seems so personal but acts a visual record of an experience and location and this is something I really hope to achieve in my own artwork for this book. Researching Nigel and his work has made me realise that artwork needn't be overly complicated to be effective at transporting and interacting with the audience. A simple watercolour painting can achieve the desired result if thought about and done well.
Ways to move forward
I am inspired and want to try my hand at painting. (*cue dramatic music*)
This is something I have put off since starting this course as I have never achieved results with painting that I am happy with in the past. Its messy, unpredictable and scary to be trying something completely new at this late stage in the module, but I am motivated to try and fingers crossed it works out and proves to be a good decision in the end.

Despite being given the option to apply for mitigating circumstances because of my health, I am confident and determined at this stage not to need too and I am willing to work extra hard to complete this module to the best of my ability.
