Composition: Practical Task

Aims/task

For this task, we are asked to generate 5 roughs based on our visual theme ( mine being "Cowboys and Indians") focusing on 3 main compositional elements: figure, object and landscape. From these roughs we were to create a final A5 image taking into consideration the 4 main principles of composition: area, depth, line, and value and the arrangement/placement of key compositional elements as outlined in our studio session and briefing.

I really wanted to have a go at what was covered in the handout we were given in the studio for this task. Here, the compositional elements were cut out of paper as basic forms/shapes, to make the arrangement of the composition a lot easier and more free when considering layout.

Roughs

I began by cutting out the main 3 elements I wanted to feature in my final image.
Figure: Indian
Object: Teepee, dreamcatcher, arrows
Landscape: Mountains, leaves

Shape roughs 4 & 5

Once I knew what elements I wanted to include, I began cutting more versions of these elements out of plain paper, changing size to vary perspective/viewpoint in each rough. From these initial "shape" based roughs, I was able to produce a second set of 5 more considered roughs in pencil to work from for my final image. This process was greatly beneficial to me, as just being able to move my main elements around within a frame freely, helped me make the most of the space, using the elements to their greatest value.
