Studio Brief 1: 'I See Faces' - Balloon GIF Artwork Development

Hot Air Balloon GIF: Artwork Development

Moving forward with my hot air balloon GIF idea, I knew that with all the moving elements I wanted the artwork to be bold and striking. I choose to use paper-cut techniques for this GIF, so as to challenge myself in attempting to make it move - but to also reduce confusion with all the separate elements. i feel if i was to create the artwork for this gif using another media like ink, paint of coloured pencil - this might take away from the overall individual moving elements as there are so many.

I decided to approach this by having each moving element individually cut, so that it can be physically moved along so to speak, in photoshop when it comes to compiling each frame. Hopefully this will help make things more simple and i will be able to move each individual element separately from the others, so each element can have its own timing/directional movement within each frame in the GIF.

Paper cut elements

Moving sun and rays:

Split pin inserted to help with spinning movement

Markings measured out to help pin point exact distance in ray movement.
Hopefully to help with smooth and continuous motion when animating

Mountains:

Trees:

For the trees, I thought it would be helpful to create a strip of papercuts, specifically measured to be twice as long as my GIF width dimention. This is so that when i come to scan it in with the markings, I can move the tree element along by a specific measurement in each frame helping again with smooth continuous movement.

Final paper-cut scenery:

Ballon character:

Because there are so many elements in this GIF, I wanted the character to remain quite simple. As I plan on this character to bob up and down, it will be quite easy to work this out in each frame using photoshop, without needing to be marked out specifically like the other elements.

Strengths
I am really pleased with how this artwork has come together. Each element is simple and bold in colour, which should help un-complicate the overall aesthetic of the GIF. I am also pleased that I managed to push my idea by doing this out of paper. I am not sure how many GIFs have been attempted out of moving paper.

Weaknesses
I am worried about the next digital stage of creating this GIF. I hope all my markings and planning come together and help make the overall process a lot less daunting and confusing within each frame, than i'm fearing it will be.
