I have been really ill and stuck in the house for a while, so feeling brave I decided to get out - pockets full of tissues and a swig of cough medicine included. It was halloween after all and a friends birthday so thinking that fresh air and spooky vibes would do me some good, I headed out to the O2 Academy in the centre of Leeds for some good music at a pretty large event called Hospitality. Previously being a cult follower of the night and its resident Dj's, I knew what to expect and sure enough I was soon beaten by my sore throat and tonsils and did not have the energy to last the night being trampled on, barged past and knocked into whilst trying to dance (#smallpersonproblems).
Before leaving, I spotted one of the Dj's due to play, who happens to be from Cambridge back home. Matt Gresham aka 'Logistics' and his brother Dan Gresham aka 'Nu:Logic' are both signed by Hospital Records and I have met them a few times back home whilst at their Drum 'n' Bass night Spoonfed.
Speaking to Matt that night got me thinking of the third brother Tim Gresham aka 'Mr Penfold'. For those who don't know of him...he is AWESOME and one of the main reasons / influences behind why I am looking for a career in the illustration industry and what areas I am interested in.
Mr Penfold is a graffiti artist, screen printer, digital artist, painter, graphic artist, marker pen extraordinaire etc - you name it he is it by way of all things 'street'. His work features on top urban clothing lines, album covers, club flyers, audio visuals and musical branding all throughout the underground music industry. In relation to our SB2 brief 'A Day in the Life', its his use of block colours, variation in tone and character design that have got me thinking how I want my final pieces to stand out. Although we are only allowed to use 2 colours (+ stock) for this brief, we are allowed to use a variety of hues, so like Mr Penfold's work, I want these pieces to stand out and bright, bold colour choice is key.

Illustration/design and the music industry/underground urban street culture is something I would love to be a part of. Every aspect of it interests me from the tunes to the type, make of spray paint and possible collaborations to be had. Its such a hard area to be successful in - your either shit hot or not and that is why Mr Penfold is such a huge inspiration. One day I will get the courage to contact him, not only to spill the beans on how much I admire his work but also to ask for advice as I have no idea how to even approach getting started in this line of work.
