In Studio - Notes, Handout & Task: Colour, Value and Notan

Highlighted handout:

In studio questions task:

What role does value play in planning composition?
Helps tell what is going on in the image - strengthen the mood. Use "high key" / "low key" when choosing colours to relate to mood in the image.
-High key: Light, bright, positive colour palette
-Low key: Dark, gloomy, negative colour palette

How can we use values to focus our attention on certain information?
Use contrast vs harmony + balance

According to the handout, what are the most commonly used value plans?

How many values does it recommend to use in each picture?
3: Dark, Light, Halftone (e.g. Black, White Grey)

Value plan examples:

Light against dark                                                              Dark against light

Dark and halftone against light                                    Light and dark against halftone

In studio main points and notes:
  • "Value" in terms of colour means strength, light, dark, intensity of colour.
  • "Notan" is the japanese concept of harmonious values. This features in many japanese images and caligraphy.
  • Good use of colour palette:

         - Disney
         - Tin Tin
         - Jim Stoten
         - Jim Flora
         - Matt Taylor
         - Will Sweeny
         - Ghost Shrimp
  • When thinking of choosing a colour palette for an image - keep it simple/limited. Maybe choose 3/4 harmonious complimentary colours, then one contrasting "accent" colour.
  • Adobe "Color" CC - help with choosing colour palettes

Colour Wheels

I am really interested in colour theory and decided to have a little search for colour wheels I find useful and that I can print off and refer back too when needing help with a colour palette. Here are the examples I find most useful:
