I intially had so many ideas when first approaching this brief. I didnt really know where to start so decided to get all of my ideas down so as to see which ideas were the strongest. I think what is throwing me is this is a brief to do with a chosen city...yet it doesnt have to be a city? It can be a well known village, or location etc. If it had been in the brief to specifically stick to a city, I think I would have found the decision making process at this stage a lot easier.
Lists, notes and diagrams for possible themes
| Initial ideas |
Strengths:
- A unique and slightly different idea/take on the brief
- Would be fun to recreate and recognisable
Concerns:
- Unsure if there is enough in common for 4 cards to be a set within this theme
- Would the audience recognise the city without the main character?
Strengths:
- A nice idea for classical based imagery
- Unique and interesting idea to bring to light
Concerns:
- A lot of these cities are now ruins - is this ok?
- Visually interesting enough?
Strengths:
- really strong idea for actual cities
- Unique and cleaver (i think)
- I like the idea of focusing on elements as this has pulled up some
interesting cities and information
Concerns:
- Completely unrecognisable theme to link cards - how would anyone know?
- No most easterly/westerly set cities really...
land extends the whole way around the globe with no set point
Strengths:
- locations are interesting and easy to see what elements would feature in each postcard
Concerns:
- Not sure how to find a set within this theme or how to choose
- Is idea a little weak - too far removed from city brief?
- Recognisable?
Strengths:
- Similar to previous idea however as theses are current wonders (not ancient)
maybe these are more recognisable?
Concerns:
- Still too far removed from city brief
Strengths:
- Potential for pretty aesthetic (similar to illustrator Monsieur Z?)
- A chance to really promote a location and make someone want to visit here
Concerns:
- Beach links the theme but may be too similar across postcard set?
- Anything else to link set within theme?
Strengths:
- Interesting landscape, environment and key elements
- Quite specific to their states/cities/countries
- Informative and could possibly produce promotional based artwork
Concerns:
- Maybe too similar in scenery
- Enough variety?
Chosen theme: NATIONAL PARKS
I have chosen the theme "National Parks" as whilst exploring my ideas, I became the most inspired by its potential. I love landscapes and I feel that this will lend itself to vector based illustration really well.
With too many parks to choose from and not knowing where to start, I took it upon myself to see which are the top most visited national parks in the world and the ones most people recognise. Most of the research I have found suggests that the parks in the US and are the most renowned, therefore I have specifically chosen to base my postcards on Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Canyon National Park and The Great Smoky Mountains. I hope the individual elements in each park are varied enough to set the postcards apart from each other. Each park is in a specific state and completely dominates its surroundings...does this kind of count as a city?
National park concept initial ideas
Each national park is like its own little bubble of life, often with its own environment, climate and specific species of plant and animal to that areas as a consequence. It is through this idea that i thought it would be a strong concept to design each national park as a floating island all on its own, separate from the world around it. Each national park island will have all the key elements specific to the park.
