Studio Brief 3: 'Persons of note' - 3 Names and Research



For this brief I have been given 3 names to choose from in order to produce a body of work representing this persons life, legacy, history, achievements etc.

I have chosen to look into Bruce Lee, having experienced my dad being such a fan for a long long time and growing up not really knowing what all the fuss was about. he has has such an interesting life and as their seems to be a lot to him, his personality and way of living, I think this will give me a lot to work from when approaching this brief.

Research

Main points discovered whilst researching into Bruce Lee


  • Born in the year 1940 - the year of the dragon
  • Born In San Francisco China Town
  • Moved to Hong King when he was 3 years old.
  • Grew up fighting and being in trouble. Japanese invasion. Poverty. Decided to learn martial art Wing Chun in order to stay out of trouble
  • Fights and arrests lead to father sending hi back to America to study
  • Bruce studied philosophy
  • Began teaching Jun Fan Gung Fu (literally Bruce Lee's Kung Fu) to friends and later set up an institute
  • Foundered well renowned martial art form Jeet Kune Do "Intercepting the Fist"
  • Lived by by "Stages of Cultivation" philosophy - "using no way as way" and "having no limitation as your limitation".
  • Starred in many famous martial arts movies and brought traditional Chinese culture to the big screen - massive impact on Asian movie making. 
  • had many seizures - often thought to be a result of his rigorous exercise regime.
  • After consuming pain killers for a migraine and hashish, Bruce slipped into a coma and died - creating vast rumours around his death. 
  • Died in 1973
