OUIL503 Collaborative: Contributing and Taking Charge

Contributing and Taking charge

The main difficulty we seem to be having s a group is prioritising our time for this bref and committing to it fully.

It is because of this that I took it upon myself to try and get us organised.
Below are examples of the comprehensive lists and ideas I shared with the group in an attempt to get the ball rolling and in the end we actually collectively chose one of my ideas for our final design and mock up which was a big confidence boost.

______________
Sharing my Ideas to the group:

Hey here are my ideas so far. I actually have many haha and they keep changing but these were what I had in mind. Maybe ambitious maybe not but let me know what you think :) Thanks!

Idea 1: Diorama / Shadow Box Visual Experience

Window display divided into 3 (to coincide with window partitions) and help create a diverse visual experience and vary the products on display.

Each section of window a different colour palette/visual experience

Theme: Autumn
Concept: Memories of summer / transition to Autumn / Autumn stories
Content: Bringing memories in the form of Polaroids to life. Each window section is a layered diorama, building up the 3D image of the Polaroid memory.
Materials: Layers of cut illustrations created with MDF (for real installation). Made from paper/card for our mock up
Paper cut, fold and engineering to help create sense of 3D space
Decals on window to add another layer to diorama / window effect to influence what the audience sees / create even more depth in diorama experience.
Each layer illustrated and lit with a bright use of colour (in keeping with 2016 Autumn/ winter colour trends)
Colour: could incorporate gradients, light to dark, light sensitive paint, lighting/neon strips/outlines to illuminate different parts of display/ products at different times of day and capitalise on the concept of "change" and "transition"
Light could be placed cleverly so as to shine through different coloured thinner materials/paper, so as to create mood lighting of different tones and a sense of space.

Notes:
Could be one long scene ( not split up into 3)

Products placed on shelves/in relevant places in display

If display split into 3-each area could be lit differently/alternate in lighting-grabbing customers attention towards different areas of display at different times

Items linking with each scene could also be made from paper (leaves, mushrooms, flowers etc) depending on Polaroid concept

Interactive chalk board around window for people to add their tags/memories
Bring the Polaroid to life (Polaroid signifies memory)

App to upload summer/ Autumn memories as Polaroids - win a prize? Have a polaroid window for customers to take their own polaroid pics and upload?

Each window section (separated by partitions) is a diarama / 3D version of the Polaroid (with product placement)

Decal of the Polaroid format on the window in each section with a different hand type scribble / note for each. The decal would be for the white area of the Polaroid only- with the photo area left cut out - acting as a window for the audience to look through and see display.

Idea 2: Dolls House

Window display divided into 3 (to coincide with window partitions) and help create a diverse visual experience and vary the products on display.

Each section of window a different colour palette/visual experience

Theme: Autumn, Home, warmth, familiar
Concept: Dolls house sections. Rooms reflect modern twist on a dolls house, with product placement within each scene where in would appropriately go. This would make it quite easy to place products and capitalise on the relationship between product and space/environment within display.
Content: display split into 3 to work with window partitions. Each section is a different "cross section" / "slice" of a different floor/group of rooms within a dolls house. Each room/ display section could reflect different moments throughout Autumn using different colour, lighting & content.
Rooms/ floors could be made to look 3D as a physical room or layered diorama look as suggested in idea 1.
Materials: MDF for structure of real display. Paper/card structure for mock up?
Colour: different colour schemes for different rooms/sections. Like the inside of a house.
Lighting: could be used appropriately to give a sense of space, highlight various products / draw attention to different areas of display. Small areas of light could add detail to display, intricacy (light through windows, actual floor lamps/ chandeliers in display go on at different times?
Neon lighting to outline/add pops of colour and draw attention to various areas in display.
Props: extras could be made from paper/card - all illustrated with an Autumn feel.

Notes: 3 sections of dolls house-3 mini themes within display. 3 different colour palettes/patterns/lighting times etc
Could link with the 3 areas of the John Lewis product range as outlined in brief:
-fashion
-home
-electrical

Could use decals on window to create/accentuate the 3 sections to outline and influence what the customer sees, incorporating / outlining the separate colour schemes for each area etc.
Nature could still factor heavily, entwining itself around each doll house section, vines, leaves, ivy etc
Consider outside space as well....garden to dolls house? Posters plants etc

Chosen idea by the group (below):

Idea 3: An Autumn Tale

Window display divided into 3 (to coincide with window partitions) and help create a diverse visual experience and vary the products on display.

Each section of window a different colour palette/visual experience

Theme: Autumn story, transition from summer to Autumn - Autumn inside and out
Concept: each section of display describes an Autumn tale/ experience. A story from left to right? Moving from inside to outside to experience Autumn. Products can be showcased for inside house as well as outside.
Content:
-Section 1: looking out the window at the changing season, leaves, trees, typical Autumn scene etc
-Section 2: inside the house getting ready to go outside for a walk in Autumn (warm fire, coat stand, wellies, scarves)
-Section 3: outside the house (piles of leaves, Autumn feel, autumn walk/experience, trees, park, Autumn in the garden, windy etc)
Each section could be separated by its content as well as colour etc to coincide with the window partitions
Lights could illuminate each stage of the "Autumn journey" subtly - (1st section, then second, then 3rd) guiding audience through journey and whole of display
Capitalise on change & transition, change in season - what new season brings
Materials: MDF for main, paper/card for mock up
Could be 3 individual scenes made up as layered illustrations / diorama idea or could have elements for each scene made from paper/card/MDF.
Doorways/think about visual transition between each section. A merging of colours? Literally paint each section a different colour palette to separate?
Products placed where appropriate to each scene - inside house: electronics & home...outside: fashion?

Notes:
Could be for any autumn journey - not just from inside to outside but could be 1 long display for a long walk for example.

Change in season from left to right - change in landscape/nature/experience that the customer goes through when looking at display?

Needs to work from left to right as well as right to left. Each section needs to work well on its own at any one time.

For all ideas decals could be made and added to window facing outwards to help with overall design concept feel.

Use lighting in creative ways: add colour, depth, interest, sectioning of display, lighting for low lit location of shop front, different lighting for nightie display?

Props, backdrops, objects in and amongst the products being showcased can be illustrated/painted/cut/folded - handmade to help create the atmosphere and interesting aesthetic

Email to group:

Hi Guys so here is some info on boards. Hopefully after reading through this - we can all decide and take responsibility for a board or two and complete the content individually. Then we can bring it all together tomorrow and collectively put the final submission boards together and decide on layout, colour scheme/ what should be included in the final ones.

Board Submission reference:
Here are links to some responsive collaborative board submissions from 3rd years students. This helped me in terms of the what we could include on our boards etc and could possibly help us with the layout tomorrow :)

These submissions have obviously been tackled in a different way to how we are doing ours as the briefs themselves are different and also last year I think the the 3rd years had to enter and submit to 2 collaborative briefs as part of their responsive module….meaning I think they had to submit less boards/their approaches to the briefs were less in depth therefore were only required to submit 4-5 boards max per entry .

We can obviously have a smaller number of boards if you all wanted…it says a max of 8 in the brief deliverables but we can try and concentrate it down tomorrow to make ours super concise and to the point once we have all the content finished.

**********

Board Content:

Ok so in looking at the 3rd year submissions, they all seem to follow a similar structure in terms of content. Here are my ideas for what should be included and on what board etc. Any ideas to add at all feel free to add/change/tell me this is all shit guys - this is just a guide that I thought would be helpful to get us all started after looking at previous submissions.

In terms of writing amount - the boards are all super clear, simple, brief and to the point. Only give info that could help the judges understand our approach and outcome idea :)

Board 1

Title/introduction board?
  • Introducing our submission
  • Board predominantly one large image of our final polaroid artwork/illustrations/paper cut image
  • Could act as a sneak preview of our final outcome and draw in / intrigue the judges.

Examples:

  • Would include the john lewis logo, D& AD logo along with the name of the brief we are submitting
  • Could also feature our unique handwritten type/quote/slogan used for the window “Something for those special moments this Autumn” or “Something for your special moments this autumn” - this would then repeat and link in nicely with the other boards and our mock up

Board 2
Research & Inspiration
  • Show initial stages/approach/starting points/key considerations
  • Key research/points/relevant and important info that we found imperative to our submission approach and development.
  • Inspiration
  • What we aim to communicate / what we are trying to achieve as a first response to the brief
Include:
  • key images/photos/reference material
  • Short statement and to the point
  • Any relevant quotes brand specific to John Lewis
  • Make clear the main problem asked of the brief - quote from brief "reshape expectations of what shop windows do and can be" (but keeps product firmly at its heart)

Board 3
Concept and ideas explained:

  • Explain idea behind theme: autumn, memories, snapshots
  • Emotive and directly engages passers by on a personal level
  • Explain polaroid concept and approach
  • explain 3d paper cut visuals: - process and assembly
Include:
-Include initial scamps

Board 4
Colour Palette & Product Selection Decisions
  • Colour palette research, trend research for autumn winter 2016 / key facts/statement outlining the key information we have found and are taking into consideration in our ideas and mock up
  • Product and consumer behaviour research / key facts / statement to briefly explain the main things we have found and are taking into consideration in our ideas and mock up
Include:
  • Chosen products we want to include in final display mock up
  • Chosen colour palette/swatches
Not sure about this board (board 4) and if its necessary as we will already be showing the products we have chosen on the illustrated mock-up boards and our chosen colour scheme could be included as an image on one of our research boards….?

Board 5
illustrated mock ups (home & Fashion)
-Notes/explanations?

Board 6
illustrated mockup (electrical)
paper cut polaroid mock up photo
-Notes/explanations?

Board 7
Final Outcome
  • Image/photo of our final mock up box (not sure if we should include images of the build process…not necessary..?)
  • enlarge our hand written type and include as an image as well possibly drawing attention to the slogan and its typography?
  • This mock up box needs to be presented in context so once we have photographed our final thing - we maybe should photoshop it onto an actual street with passers by etc. So the judges can see the mock up in action.
  • what we hope this resolution achieves

Board 8
Additional extras

  • snapshot of animation in action/live - mock up website link? aims of animation? ideas for the application of animation
(in the final thing there could be an animation for each section of the window (fashion, electrical and home) - these 3 animations could be the opening video played online when first clicking the link to that particular department?)

e.g - could play in the large section where the washing machine is displayed below on their website….

  • Explain ideas for the scan barcode to “bring the window to life” “bring memories to life” element. This could directly link to what is asked of us in the brief
  • Mock up of this “bring memories to life” barcode scanner in action on the john lewis website?
  • Polaroid “selfie” stand? pics? digital mock ups?
  • Any other extras?
********************

Boards: Other Info

Main things to remember/include:
  • Cant have our names/contact details of institution included on submission boards anywhere.
  • Should inside John lewis logo and D&AD logo
  • should include name of the brief
  • should include our own submission “title” / name to encompass our approach to the brief
  • should include individual board numbers
  • format/file size
  • additional extras: submission requirements for video

Format:
  • All boards have to be jpeg “slide images"
  • All boards should be 300dpi
  • Individual board dimensions: A3?- 297mm x 420mm?

Layout/Aesthetics:
Continuity between all boards
  • same type used
  • same sized images
  • same colour scheme
  • relevant logos (D&AD, John Lewis)
  • include brand slogan / our own title?

(this can all be decided upon, finalised and done together as a team tomorrow)

I hope this helps guys and if we could all decide on a board each to take responsibility for and its content then we should have everything covered and be able to put together our submission tomorrow.

I am happy to do the “Concept Explained” board number 3 as i pretty much have the writing done for that already and know the idea quite well. Then I can move on to another depending on what you guys are up for doing. Any scamps/ initial ideas sketches you guys have that you would like me to include send me over on fb or email :)

Ok so let me know what you think on FB and Ill get started on that board at least.

Thanks…. and we can do this right???

Jess
