Preparation for Print: Registration Guides

Digital registration guides

A problem I encountered when preparing to lino cut and print, is that the only lino I was able to source (big enough to stay true to my A2 print aims) was not A2 but in fact 400mm x 600mm. Instead of cutting my lino down, I thought it would be helpful to create a registration guide that would take my lino dimensions into account, whilst still being able to print onto A2 stock.

Whilst creating my Adobe illustrator digital roughs for transfer onto my lino, I thought it would be helpful at this stage to create a digital registration guide, to help work out how my lino and print stock should be alined and how they correspond with each other, hopefully creating a centred and exact final outcome.

Within this digital registration mock up, I made sure to add tabs for each section, making it clear where each elemtn should be placed. This registration mock up was also used when creating my digital roughs ready for trasnfer. For each diital rough design, I could use this document to figure out where the 'design content' should appear in each design in relation to where my lino should be placed and the print stock etc. This kept everything consistent, exact and alligned throughout my 3 digital designs, and once printed - can be used in the print process as a registration for all elements by placing them on top of this reference in their specific area.

Hand made cardboards guides

From my digital reference guide, I was also able to make a physical corner registration from cardboard, to be used throughout the print process. I am hoping this will cut down some time throughout the practical print process, and help me when it comes to trimming and the final (and hopefully neat) presentation of my prints.
