Progress Review: 3

Final progress review with Ben before module submission:

Comments:

I was pleased at the feedback received from Ben during my progress review regarding my linocuts so far. unfortunately I had been so focused on cutting 24/7 that I had forgotten to bring in much else to show him with regards to my work so far and prep for my submission. This didn't seem to matter too much though as I know what needs to be done in order for me to complete everything on time:

Complete my linos. @ of my A2 linocut plates. Ben made the suggestion of getting all 3 linocuts completed this evening. @ are close to being completed, but they took over a month to cut. I am seriously doubting I will be able to finish all three in time for the submission, let alone in 1 night. My hand hardy works anymore as it is. I will complete the 2 close to being done first then move onto the 3rd if i have time.

I still have a lot of blogging to do at this stage. I have been adding drafted posts as the module has gone a long, I just need to make sure they are all competed with relevant imagery and Issuu documents as requested.

During my tutorial, Ben suggested that instead of my colour merging idea to incorporate 2 colours onto one plate resulting in the 2 colour print specified in the brief, I should analogue print my linocuts in plain black ink, scan these in and add colour to them digitally. This advice was off the back of seeing some digital mock ups I made to show him different outcomes I would like to achieve in the printing process. The mock up in question where the sun in the background of the composition is gold, with the remaining detail of the Italo Calvino portrait and city black, was a mock up i did during my digital rough generation. This was created to see what i could achieve if doing a 2 colour lino plate separation. I did not go down the route of the separation technique because I wanted to invest my time in producing highly detailed 1 plate lino cuts with a printed colour merge for interesting aesthetics and was also worried about the registration process when it came to print.

I understand why the mock ups would have been visually pleasing and a possible way to go in-terms of my final outcomes, it was my original idea for the final printed aspect of this module after all, however I found it a little disheartening to hear that Ben would like me to have a digital set of final pieces instead of analogue prints after the months invested in cutting my linos. I am not sure how to take this advice forward. I am a little unmotivated now to begin the printing process, knowing that a digital version may be preferred. I could have just knocked my designs up completely digitally ages ago and added some texture and colour and saved myself months of pain and sleepless nights.

I think for now to save my own sanity and refrain from becoming frustrated, I wont give up on my chosen process and I will focus on producing some really high quality linocut prints first. After I have finished analogue printing, I will then see if my submission would benefit from the digital aspect suggested by Ben as well.
