I began looking for packaging inspiration online and came across a lot of examples on Pinterest that interest me:
Presentation/Packaging Pinterest Board:
Taking into consideration the large scale of my final prints (A2), the packaging of these prints needs to be sturdy and functional, protecting the artwork whilst displaying aesthetics and creating intrigue to what will be housed inside.
Ideas for presentation packaging:
When researching into Italo Calvino and his history, I learned that Calvino was a man of many letters, corresponding with various government officials with regards to his works and political views, keeping in touch with many influential and often famous friends and also the secretive scandal of his affair with with Italian actress Elsa De Giorgi outlined in very intimate love letters.
In keeping with this idea of 'a man of letters' I am thinking of creating a large envelope style folio.
The folio will look like a letter, made from sturdy white / brown mount board, with a flap that opens revealing the prints inside which can be slid out for viewing.
As gold is an important element within my prints, I plan on hand cutting design elements from my final print compositions into the front of the white sleeve/envelope. These cut elements will then be backed with some of the gold stock i have sourced, highlighting the gold detail through to the front. i would also like to line the inside of the sleeve/envelope with this gold, so that when it is opened, the gold will be apparent.
As well as the hand cut design elements, i would like to cut a title into the front of the sleeve which will read 'Invisible Cities' in a pleasing script typeface or an intriguing quote from the Invisible Cities book itself.
Possible envelope templates:
I would like to create a string tie envelope for an added 'crafty' feel and here are links to a few template designs I have found:

Invisible Cities
Quotes from text to use for title:
"Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears"
“An invisible landscape conditions the visible one”
"Every time I describe a city I am saying something about Venice.”
“Work stops at sunset. Darkness falls over the building site. The sky is filled with stars. "There is the blueprint," they say.”
“With cities, it is as with dreams: everything imaginable can be dreamed"
"Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears"
Possible fonts:
Keeping in mind that I will have final analogue lino prints as well as digitally edited lino print designs, I could create various sleeves/envelopes for the different style prints that I have. I could also create a sleeve/envelope for my final lino blocks which will help keep the lino's protected as well as presenting them as part of my final work. So much effort has gone in to them after all so it would a shame to just shove them in a portfolio without any consideration for their presentation.
Hopefully taking into consideration the presentation of my final artwork will help boost the overall experience of viewing them and will hopefully not be too much additional work.
Next steps:
- Buy relevant stock from the library/uni shop such as:
- A2 Mount board
- A1 quality white stock (large enough to create front of envelope plus net and
opening flaps)
- Source quality twine/string and split pins
- Create nets for each of the sleeves/envelopes
- Draw/cut designs into the front of the stock
- Back front cut design with gold stock, showing through the cuts
- Line the sleeve/envelope with gold stock
- Assemble sleeve/envelope
