"Coralise" Clay Products: Process

"Coralise"

When thinking about the final resolutions for this project, I was really interested in creating physical products as well as my digital proposals for murals etc. I am such a hands on practitioner and like to complete physical finalised artwork at any opportunity I can get and also feel this would help produce a more interesting body of work for a project I have become extremely passionate about.

Throughout my research into oceanic life-forms, specifically Coral, environmental conservation and patterns within nature and micro organisms, I thought it would be a great idea to produce some 3D clay items, linking with my project and also chosen area of context "Object and Environment". This is a brand new process to me on this course, having not attempted it at this stage in my practice at all. Exciting!

These clay items are to be used as a part of my submission, showing a range of approaches to spreading awareness of the issues highlighted in my research - using creativity/artistic approaches (not just bombarding people with facts) and the application of my concepts.

I can see these items working alongside a creative campaign and collection of work, that people could buy either in a museum shop or exhibit, with proceeds being donated to various charities and conservation organisations/efforts for the cause.

Items I wanted to create include:

1: 3D Coral stickers - "Coralise".
    Concept:

  • 3D clay magnetic pieces acing like stickers that I can stick in various urban locations spreading the awareness of coral degradation in our oceans
  • linking directly to issues such as "blast" mining/fishing - which provide many building materials / coral material used in bricks for our cities buildings etc.
  • Coral taking back what is theirs.
  • Coral growing from the coral used in our buildings bricks and cement
  • Destroy one habitat (coral) - to provide another habitat (buildings, houses, city homes).
  • True to the very literal sense of my area of context: objects within environment and how people can interact with and have a more direct experience with - strengthening the delivery of my message/concept behind the product

2: 3D true to life models of forms within nature and various species of corals

  • a collection which could appear in an exhibition or museum alongside larger illustrative works)

3: Coral key rings

  • to appear as a product for purchase in a museum/exhibition shop / to be bought as an awareness item once a customer has donated money)

4: Coral pins / badges

  • to appear as a product for purchase in a museum/exhibition shop / to be bought as an awareness item once a customer has donated money) to be worn on either clothing or bags to spread further awareness of the issues

5: Coral forms magnets

  • to appear as a product for purchase in a museum/exhibition shop / to be bought as an awareness item once a customer has donated money) To be used within the home on fridges, radiators etc

Issues I want to address / raise awareness of (which could be reflected in clay making approach/finished aesthetics):

  • Coral Bleaching
  • Ocean Blast Mining / Fishing
  • Environmental Conservation
  • Oceanic Conservation
